After reading two different stories in our reading books about fossils and dinosaurs our 2nd grade students were given the opportunity to make their own fossils to take home with them.
Students were given Crayola Air Dry Clay to roll into a small flat circle. Then they were allowed to choose from a variety of sea shells, dinosaur footprints, rocks and plants to imprint into their clay. The fossils were then left for 2 days to dry on the window sill. Students had to journal about their 'findings' and what they could learn from the fossils that they 'discovered'.
Students strapped on plastic gloves and loaded up their paper bags to help with cleaning up the new athletic complex at our school. We decided as a class to complete this community service while learning about being good citizens and talking about what things we can do. The students were very proud of the amount of trash they picked up and also very sad to see how much people don't throw away in the garbage cans that are available. It was a GREAT learning experience for all!
